First Reading · 2 Kings 4:42-44

42And a certain man came from Baalsalisa, bringing to the man of God, bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley, and new corn in his scrip. And he said: Give to the people, that they may eat.43And his servant answered him: How much is this, that I should set it before a hundred men? He said again: Give to the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the Lord: They shall eat, and there shall be left.44So he set it before them: and they ate, and there was left, according to the word of the Lord.

commentary

The gift is small and exactly counted, twenty loaves of barley, and new corn in his scrip (v. 42), bread of the firstfruits brought to the man of God by a man from Baalsalisa, which Calmet places fifteen miles south of Diospolis and north of Jerusalem. Where the Douay has in his scrip, Haydock notes that the Protestant version reads "in the husk thereof," and he explains carmel as "a greenish ear of corn," which, Calmet adds, "might be rubbed in the hand, and so eaten." This first-fruits offering of barley and green grain is set before a hundred men (v. 43), whom Calmet and Haydock identify as the community living at Galgal.

The servant's question, How much is this, that I should set it before a hundred men?, is the one Menochius hears again on the lips of Christ's disciples in John 6:9, and Calmet says plainly that God multiplied the provisions. The man of God answers with nothing of his own. He repeats the order Give to the people, that they may eat and grounds it in a word received, for thus saith the Lord: They shall eat, and there shall be left. The narrator closes by tying the outcome to that word, and there was left, according to the word of the Lord (v. 44). The servant counted twenty loaves against a hundred mouths, and the prophet counted the promise, and the leftovers proved the prophet right.
